WHAT IS CREATIVITY?

Creativity is any act or activity where you use your brain to think of or imagine something new, even if it is something that is new to just you. Simply put, a creative act is something that you can define yourself. It can be almost anything you can imagine, a solution to a problem, or a doodle on a piece of scratch paper, a work of art, a bit of poetry, a meal, some writing, a drawing, a product, or even just an idea. Creativity is essential to living a wellness lifestyle.

Being creative is good for your health. Studies show that engaging in creative activities improves your overall health and actually makes you happier. Being creative also helps to decrease feelings of depression and loneliness. It can improve your quality of sleep, and it can boost your morale, and your self-confidence.

Make Something
  • The next time you're about to buy something, ask yourself, if you could make it instead.
  • Instead of buying a birthday card for a friend, make one! Cut out images from magazines, and tape or glue them onto construction paper. Use whatever is around the house.
  • Instead of buying a picture or a poster, take some photographs you have in your home and make a collage of them to hang on your wall.
  • Bake a cake or cookies instead of buying them and put something new and fun in them. Maybe add pieces of your favorite candy bar, or your favorite spice?
  • All you have to do is ask yourself when you're about to buy something: “Could I make that?”

Good for Your Brain

Engaging in creative activities makes your brain stronger. Like every other part of your body, your brain is something that also needs to be kept healthy. Your brain is made up of many different parts. When you are creative, your brain actually makes new connections between its many different parts, and your brain releases good chemicals into your body. These “creative chemicals” help you to feel better and they make you healthier. The new connections you create make your brain stronger. Being creative is an easy way to exercise your brain.
